How to Fix a Concrete Counter Top in the Laundry Room
A laundry room is used for washing, ironing and sometimes for drying clothes. In this room, a work top is made to carry the washing sink. The faucet may be of stainless steel or terrazzo dhobi sink. Support to the counter can be of masonry or anchoring into the wall. Surfaces are finished with polished terrazzo or ceramic tiles. This enables cleaning and drying without absorbing water. It should be fixed along the wall length and with a width of two feet.
Concrete counters should be made to a height of two and a half feet. This is measured from the finished floor level. Below the work top, additional storage can be done. Its important to note that the materials used for the closet must be water and damp resistant. The fixing commences with measuring the location of the work top. This is best placed on the walls joining at ninety degrees. It gives support to three ends when recessed into the walls.
Hacking is done to about three inches into the wall. Form work is then built at a height of two and half feet. This form work carries the wet concrete of the counter. A template is used to leave a hole for the sink. A meshed fabric reinforcement is laid into the forms. Additional high yield bars of half an inch diameter are tied along the mesh fabric. Concrete is added in the form work with the template in place. It is laid to a thickness of three inches.
The counter top concrete is let to dry for seven days. The form work is stripped off. The sink and drainers are then fixed in the template position.. Ceramic tiling or polished terrazzo finish is done to the surfaces and on the sides. Tiling can be done to match the existing wall surfaces. When the surface is finished, the water is connected and the sink tested. For ironing purposes, a socket is fixed on one side of the wall to provide power in the room.
