Toxic Household Cleaners – Top 3 List of Dangerous Chemicals in Your Laundry Room

What comes in contact with our body on a daily basis has an impact on our health. From the air we breathe to the food we eat, even what touches our skin. All these things are called “our environment”. The importance our environment has on our health is something we all need to understand.

In today’s world, the majority of people spend too much time indoors, usually inside our own homes. Therefore, the environment inside our homes can affect our health even more than the environment outside our homes. But both are very important to our well-being.

In almost every room of our home, there is a product that contains toxic chemicals that we should be avoiding. Here is a list of the top 3 toxic household products in our laundry room. You should consider either getting rid of them, or at least replaced them by a more eco-friendly version.

Laundry Detergent

As we all know, these are cleaners used to clean stains and remove dirt from the household laundry. They contain cleaning agents that may irritate skin or make people more sensitive to other chemicals. Fragrances added to laundry detergents cause severe effects such as sneezing, headaches, respiratory irritation, and watery eyes in individuals suffering from allergy and/or asthma. Researches have found that one-third of the substances used in fragrances are toxic. Some Laundry Detergents also contain surfactants to remove grease and oil stains. Surfactants, when discharged in your municipality waste water, break down into molecules that are even more toxic and are not biodegradable.

Fabric Softener

As for the Laundry Detergent, Fabric Softeners often contain fragrances. Not only are the fragrances harmful (see Laundry Detergent section above), but the carriers of fragrance (phthalates) show negative effects on reproductive health (deformities in testicles, reduce sperm count, etc.). Moreover, this harsh chemical pollutes the air and water while increasing the risk of developing liver cancer. Natural fragrances like essential oils are costly compared to synthetic fragrances and that is why companies keep using such toxic ingredients for their fragrance.

Chlorine Bleach

Ordinary chlorine bleach kills bacteria, viruses, fungi and molds. Therefore it is called a disinfectant or an antimicrobial pesticide as well as a fungicide. Regular household bleach contains Sodium Hypochlorite. Contact with Sodium Hypochlorite can severely irritate and burn the skin and eyes, with possible permanent eye damage. Inhaling Sodium Hypochlorite can irritate the nose, throat, airway and lungs. Higher exposures may cause headaches, dizziness, a build-up of fluid in the lungs, nausea and vomiting.

Of course we cannot eliminate all cleaners from our home. And this list is unfortunately only the tip of the iceberg.
